D’Abernon Cup Final 2024

On Sunday 8th September, the Old Reptonians and Old Reedonians gathered at the wonderful venue of the All England Club to contest the final of the 2024 D’Abernon Cup. Despite the sun shining all day, the heavy rain of the previous week saw the match played indoors at the lovely tennis centre.

The first round of matches were extremely tight, with the Old Reptonians 1st’s beating the Old Reedonians 2nd’s in a tight championship tie break. Meanwhile, the Old Reedonians 3rd’s beat the Old Reptonians 2nd’s after saving match points in the deciding tie break. The third match of the round was a more comfortable win for the Old Reedonians.

In the second round, the quality of tennis remained extremely high with the large crowd of spectators (over 30) really enjoying the tennis on show. The Old Reedonians 1st pair were very strong winning in straight sets with their second pair also holding off the Repton 1st pair. It left a very tight finish to the final match of the round and some excellent play in the championship tie break saw the Old Reedonians 3rd pair prevail.

So all in all, a 5-1 win for the Old Reedonians which doesn’t at all reflect how close the match really was. They become champions for 2024 and all the teams can look forward to the 2025 edition. Many thanks to the All England Club for providing such a wonderful venue and afternoon tea which was thoroughly enjoyed by all!
