The annual iPubs vs Fitz fixture took place once again in Dublin, continuing a tradition that has stood since 1962. This historic event, played every year without fail, is much more than just a competition - it’s a celebration.

iPubs came out of the gates firing, racing to a commanding 3-0 lead in the opening round - a dream start! Rory Smith and George Nixon were instrumental in this early success, securing a standout win by defeating Fitz’s top pair in a thrilling match that set the tone for the day. Dom Hemy and Max McAlistair also delivered an excellent performance, securing a key rubber for the team and giving iPubs vital early momentum. Determined to fight back, Fitz responded well in the second round. They found their rhythm, remained composed, and claimed two out of the three rubbers to get their team on the board. With the overall score standing at 4-2 heading into the final round, the fixture was still very much in the balance. With one hand on the trophy, iPubs stepped up once again. The top pair of Ben Rogers and Jamie Boden led from the front, securing a crucial fifth win to seal the decisive fifth rubber and the first win on Irish soil since 2019.

After the tennis, the teams gathered in the bar to watch the Six Nations showdown between Ireland and England on the big screen. Laughter, banter, and discussion of the day’s victories and defeats filled the air, with everyone enjoying the spirit of the occasion with a pint of the black stuff! Unfortunately, the long-awaited English double in Dublin (winning both the rugby and the tennis) will have to wait for another year or so. Once the final whistle blew, the night was far from over, as iPubs and the Fitz teams made their way into Dublin, where the celebrations carried on into the early hours.

The hospitality of Fitz was exceptional, as always. We are incredibly fortunate to have them not just as opponents but as friends. The warmth, camaraderie, and sportsmanship they bring to this event are what make the rivalry so special. With another chapter of this great tradition complete, the night ended in great spirits and the inevitable talk of next year’s rematch - one that will mark yet another year in the legacy of iPubs vs Fitz.

We eagerly look forward to continuing the fixture with our friends across the Irish Sea and to welcoming them when we host in 2026!

Ben Rogers - Captain
